Kyle Tucker Blog Update

KT is back again, this time with an interview with Chris Drager, Marcus Davis, Ju-Ju Clayton, Rock, and Cris Hill. Enjoy.

Even More Spring Game Analysis

Just as you thought you had enough Spring Game, here's more:

Nathan Warters from the Lynchburg News-Advance has more on Marcus Davis and some other tidbits. Warters also has Ryan Williams racking up the yards.

Taft Coghill from the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Start, like many others, has some info on Ryan Williams who may be the man-crush of the entire Hokie nation right now.

Ryan Williams stole the show according to the News-Leader.

More Spring Game Analysis

In the name of consolidation, here are some links about the Spring Game. Overall consensus - Offense is going to be GOOOOOOD. I think hell might have frozen over.

Randy King from the Roanoke Times has more on the offensive fireworks.

Kyle Tucker from the Virginian Pilot has the inside scoop on the stronger Hokie offense.

Tom Bone from the Bluefield Daily Telegraph has talked with Beamer about his playmakers.

Paul Woody from the Richmond Times-Dispatch talks about the Hokie's high hopes after the Spring Game.

Nathan Warters has more on the explosion of offense, particularly from one Ryan Williams.

Speaking of Williams, Norm Wood at the Daily Press has a good, in depth look at his Saturday performance.

Caleb Farris Decision

Randy King has more on Farris' decision. It is a greyshirt, meaning he'll either count toward 2010 or 2011, something that has really helped Beamer & Co out with recruiting numbers in the last couple years. Here is a portion of his article:

"It was crazy up there [Saturday]," said Farris, referring to an atmosphere that was spiked by a record 41,000 fans at the Tech spring game. "I'm still on a Virginia Tech high right now. I'm glad to get this over with, so now I can focus and lifting and getting bigger, and maturing mentally and physically. I want to give Virginia Tech its money's worth when I get there."

Spring Game Analysis and Review

KT has updated his blog, with highlights and interviews about the Spring Game. Check it out, and here is a preview:

A couple of other notables: Kam Chancellor is a beast, as previously mentioned in this space. The proverbial light has come on for him at free safety and he is turning the proverbial lights out on offensive players. He clobbered Xavier Boyce on one play, the destroyed RB Zac Evans on a run up the middle, popping the ball loose and resulting in a 20-yard touchdown return by DT Antoine Hopkins, who added two “sacks” to his big day.

Lastly ... watch out Greg Boone. The tight end job seems very much up in the air all the sudden. And what a surprise. Chris Drager has had a big spring, capped by a stellar spring game. He hauled in four passes for 41 yards and looks like one of Taylor’s favorite targets. That will be interesting to see develop in the spring. The Hokies appear loaded at tight end.

Kyle Tucker Blog Update

KT has more on the secondary, just minutes before the Spring Game started. He's got quotes from Whitley and Hill this time. Enjoy.

Online Radio for the Spring Game

Here are some links for those Hokies (like myself) who are not in Blacksburg this weekend and would like to listen to the Spring Game:

ESPN Blog Update

HD has done it again, this time with some good quotes from Newsome and some members of the OL on its improvement. Here is an exerpt:

Four of the five offensive linemen who have been taking the majority of reps with the first team this spring are former tight ends. It's part of a recent change in recruiting philosophy that could help the root of the Hokies recent offensive problems.

"With the zone play and those types of things, we've gone the last few years in trying to find more athletic guys," said offensive line coach Curt Newsome. "A while back it was a bigger, heavier type of guy. We kind of like to grow our own, get 'em in here, let them get in the strength program, have the good feet and be able to move around. And I feel good about where we're at right now. We've got four starters back from the bowl game. We've had a real good spring."

Visitors for the Spring Game

Techsideline.com has a list of recruits attending the spring game. My favorites out of the bunch:

Justin Hunter (WR), Zach McCray (DE), Nick Dew (S), Richardo Young (QB), and Connor Davis (OL). We have an excellent shot with the middle three, a little work to do with Hunter (favoring LSU) and Davis (most likely UVA bound).

BREAKING NEWS

Techsideline.com is reporting that OG recruit Caleb Farris out of Rockbridge has committed to the Hokies. A good get, and a guy that was a VT lean the whole way.

Kyle Tucker Blog Update

KT has more from Virgil and secondary coach T. Grey. Enjoy... some good quotes from Grey in there about the future of the secondary.

Mark Leal

Leal, maybe our top QB recruit this year (and the number one on my board), is still looking around according to Jason Lieser at the Palm Beach Post. According to Lieser, Leal is looking to come to VT for our annual summer camp, and as many loyal Hokie football fans know we generally have a flurry of commitments during and directly after that time.

Here's hoping we land him, 'cause he's a good one.

2009 Spring Game Preview

The folks at Techsideline.com have a *free* update regarding the Spring Game, loaded with injury updates, who is starting for each side, and other tidbits.

Personally, I like the White Team to win, with a little more offense than we're used to seeing in April from the Hokies.

Macho Harris Draft Status

Here's an update on the Macho man from Darryl Slater at the Richmond Times-Dispatch. He's cut his hair, trying to become more professional. Here's an exerpt:

Even if it doesn't, Harris' position coach at Tech, Torrian Gray, thinks Harris' value as a player is best measured not by a stopwatch but by video highlights of his accomplishments as a Hokie -- 15 interceptions, third-most in school history, including four returned for touchdowns.

"When it comes down to it and you go back and you look at the film, I think they overvalue the 40 time," said Gray, a former NFL safety and defensive backs coach. "If a guy's gonna continuously show you he can make plays in college, it's not gonna change that he's a playmaker in the pros."

For more on Macho, look to the Collegiate Times.

Spring Game Depth Chart

Beamerball has the spring depth chart up. Gets me all giddy inside. Check it out.

Brian Saunders

Saunders, our backup Punter for the past three years, has his eye set on challenging Bowden for the starting spot this year. Nathan Warters at the Lynchburg News-Advance has a new article out on him. Here is an exerpt:

“He’s made good progress. The thing with Brian is he’s still got good potential,” Beamer said. “At times he kicks the ball extremely well. He needs to consistently kick it well. I think the more he does it, the more he will. He hasn’t been out there in front of people many times. The more he does that, the better he’ll get.”

Saunders has noticed more height and distance on his punts, and he no longer pulls his kicks to the left thanks to a slight change he made to his mechanics. He was dropping the ball on the inside of his kicking foot, which caused him to lose power.

More on the Shuman Commit

Randy King has been busy this morning, with another interview with John Shuman, Mark's dad (and FUMA coach). The highlight of the interview: John expects Mark NOT to redshirt. Surprising, but considering the fact that Wang is graduating this year, it may not be totally out of the question. Here is an exerpt:

"Starting Monday, we're going to be in the weight room, working on Mark's footwork because, you know, we're not redshirting," said his father, who occasionally speaks with tongue in cheek. "We're not going to hang around five years. He's going to start or compete for a starting job right away."

Of course, the coaches might have a say in the redshirting decision.

"We're going to get him well-schooled on what [the Hokies] need," said John Shuman, a one-time VMI standout.

Orion Martin

Like I've mentioned before, a lot of teams are looking at Martin from the 5th to 7th round of the NFL Draft as a 3-4 LB or 4-3 DE. Randy King has a nice piece on him this morning. Here is an exerpt:

"I don't know how much it hurts him because you have teams like the [Indianapolis] Colts who are very interested in Orion and have sorta used that smaller defensive end, a kind of a one-gap guy who can get upfield and get after the quarterback," said Drew Lewis, an agent for RAA Goal Line, a Bay Harbor, Fla., firm that's representing Martin.

"We've heard from a few teams like that, and I know that the [Miami] Dolphins have talked to him about playing linebacker as well in the 3-4 defense. We asked Orion to stay around 260 pounds because ... what we want to do is have them mold him in what they want him to be. The [San Francisco] 49ers love him at outside linebacker, the [Atlanta] Falcons like him a lot at defensive end, and the [Jacksonville] Jaguars like him at outside linebacker."

BREAKING NEWS

Mark Shuman has apparently committed to VT, and will announce officially at the Spring Game this weekend. The Roanoke Times has more, and be on the lookout for more.

A.J. Cann

Cann, VT's top C prospect this year, has been busy visiting schools this fall. It has been verified that he's coming to the spring game and has some favorites in mind. I know the coaches have been on him like white on rice, so hopefully we impress. I will continue to fish around for information on his visit after the spring game.

Orion Martin

I've heard some rumblings surrounding Martin that many NFL teams are looking at him as early has the fifth round, and many mocks have him going in the sixth. His special team experience is really looking good to NFL teams, and he would provide that non-stop motor that NFL teams covet.

Ryan Williams

Williams really impressed at the last scrimmage because of his moves (obviously) and his blocking. Kyle Tucker at the Virginian Pilot has a new article out on Williams and his adjustments to real life play. Here is a portion:

And that's what made Saturday's scrimmage, the Hokies' second of spring practice, so sweet for the rising redshirt freshman.

On one play, Williams blocked a defensive tackle's path to quarterback Ju Ju Clayton, then noticed a second defensive tackle bearing down on the passer. Williams launched himself at Kwamaine Battle, blasting the 283-pounder off his feet.

Who will be our PK this year?

Looks like Waldron has the job locked up, unless Journell can come in a really impress. Randy King at the Roanoke Times has an update, which also includes some OL talk and some tidbits. Here is a portion:

"It's good to hear coming from the main guy," said Waldron, who connected from 47 and 35 yards in last Wednesday's mini-scrimmage and hit a 32-yarder in the first full scrimmage on April 10.

"I've missed like one or two during team period in practice. There are a lot of good kickers here, plus we've got a couple more coming in the fall. So there's a lot of time and a lot of kicks left. It's not an easy job to get into. I've got a long ways to go, but I'm very, very happy right now."

Demetrius Taylor

Taylor has been posturing for a position since his redshirt freshman year, first at LB, then at DE, and now at DT where he's found a permanent home. I think he kinda digs DT and I like him to make a significant contribution this year. Kyle Tucker at the The Virginian Pilot has an update on him.

Macho Harris

Macho's draft status has been up in the air, and from what I've seen he could go as early as the top of the second round to the middle of the third. Whatever you think of him, you know he is a playmaker on film. The Washington Post thinks so too, as does Brandon Flowers. Check it out.

ESPN Blog Update

HD at ESPN has a new update on Darren Evans with some quotes from Hite, Ryan Williams, Frank Beamer and DE himself. Here is an exerpt:

Evans, though, is the most productive of the group, a quiet leader who, like the entire program, is shouldering higher expectations this fall. The difference this spring, though, is that Evans hasn't gotten a lot of reps, and that's because the staff already knows what he can do.

"It's a lot different from last year," Evans said. "I was really learning a lot last year, now it's kind of a review. This year, I know the expectations are high, but I know that a lot of people are excited about Ryan Williams, so that kind of cools it off for me. He probably has the bigger expectations because he's so much of a hit around here."

Ryan Williams

Williams has been lighting it up during Spring Practice from all reports I've read. Here is another sweet article from the Darryl Slater at the Richmond Times-Dispatch with some quotes and good info. Enjoy a tidbit:

He frequently wondered, "Why am I on the scout team?" He believed he had more to offer.

He found solace in the words of Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster and defensive line coach Charley Wiles. Williams enjoyed hearing them shout at their starters after he wiggled free for a gain. After practices, Foster and Wiles told Williams, "Can't wait until you play next year."

Ju-Ju Clayton Wins The Backup QB Job

Many, many links on this so I will consolidate:

From the Richmond Times-Dispatch, with some quotes from Davis and some odds and ends along with it.

From Kyle Tucker at the Virginian Pilot, another with quotes from Davis, some from Beamer, and more odds and ends

From Randy King at the Roanoke Times, with quotes from Ju-Ju and O'Cain, definitely different than the first two.

Christian LeMay

LeMay, a 2011 QB recruit from NC, hailes from the same school as current Hokie Eddie Whitley (Butler). Here is an udpate from The Charlotte Observer, and I really like the kid's size and mobility from what I've seen and heard. I don't think he's got an offer, but I know the coaches have him on the radar. I'll update you as I know more.

Kyle Tucker Blog Update

KT has more on the Ju-Ju promotion from the words of the QB man, Mike O'Cain, and some quotes from the new kicker (as of now) Matt Waldron. Check it out.

BREAKING NEWS

Randy King is reporting that Ju-Ju Clayton was named Tyrod's backup for the Fall. Maybe not a surprise to most, but a good call by the coaches in my mind, so Davis can focus on WR (I think he'll make an incredible impact there).

Alfy Hill

Hill is definitely one of the guys that I hope we land this year, because DE is looking a little thin and we could always use a guy that is big and can run. I know that he's favoring the in-state schools right now, but I do like VT's chances if he goes out of state.

Josh Eadie

Eadie, who played at Brookville with Logan Thomas and Zach McCray, is looking to push for a walk-on spot this year at DE. He has the measurables at 6'5" 230, but does he have the skills? Who knows, but the Lynchburg News-Advance has a good new article on him this week. Enjoy.

Recruiting Update

An update on Takoby Cofield, Gabriel Henderson, Zach McCray, Braushaud Breeland, and others from The State.

Louis Young

Young is coming to Blacksburg for the Spring Game with Richardo Young. Apparently he's wide open, and I'm hoping that it's a two-for-one deal with him and Young.

More Spring Practice

More spring practice updates from our friends at Vt.fanfoc.us. Enjoy this tidbit:

BeamerBall.com: Also, in watching the BeamerVision clips, Jake Johnson looks much faster than I thought he would. He said he dropped some weight to become quicker. Do you think it's worked?

Frank Beamer: Jake ran a good 40 time for us. He looks quick when we watch tape of our practices. And, as he continues to learn the position, he'll only play faster. I can tell you that all of this is very important to Jake Johnson. He's serious about what he'd doing. I'm hoping he has a great spring and I think he's on his way right now.

Doom and Gloom

Rivals.com has some arguments against VT doing it all again this season. Some of them I buy, some of them I don't, but it's a little tidbit to lower productivity today.

More on the last Scrimmage

Our friends at Vt.fanfoc.us have a good recap of the second scrimmage from the coaches. Here is my favorite part:

Kevin Sherman - Receivers

"I thought the receivers were productive in the red zone. Dyrell Roberts had a nice touchdown catch. Plus, we continue to try to be physical on the perimeter in our blocking. Danny Coale is consistent and continues to get better. Xavier Boyce has come a long way since his knee injury and he's playing faster and getting in better shape and he can really help us in our vertical game down the field. Jarrett Boykin didn't scrimmage because of his ankle and hamstring, so, Boyce got some extra work and he took advantage of it. Roberts played faster in this scrimmage than he did in our last scrimmage. I still need to clean some things up in his route running.

Mark Leal

Some good highlights from maybe my favorite QB prospect of the bunch, Mark Leal. I like his delivery and footwork - not to mention arm strength.

Tyrod Taylor

A good article by Norm Wood at the Daily Press on Tyrod's leadership and some quotes. Enjoy a tidbit:

"He's just becoming so much more polished," O'Cain said. "Everything happened so fast for him, you haven't been able to hone it the way you'd like to because he's been having to play. It's getting ready to play games. This spring, (Taylor has) slowed it down a little bit and really become a polished quarterback. That's what I've seen. His fakes are a lot better, just little things. He's more precise. He knows more about what we're doing with all the little nuances. He's a better game manager. He's taking control better. He knows what's happening across the line of scrimmage better."

I've been gone

Sorry all you loyal readers, but I've been working on papers all weekend (two 20 page papers to be exact), but expect TONS of updates in the next few days to make up for it.

Kyle Tucker's Blog is Back

Here he is, with some interviews and some commentary. I especially like the Ryan Williams block:

* We all know RB Ryan Williams can run. The big question has been whether he can block. Um. Yeah. Williams spring Ju Ju Clayton for a 23-yard scramble by first blocking A.B. Latif, then releasing him and cracking back on DT Kwamaine Battle in the backfield. The 210-pound Williams sent 283-pound Battle flying. It was a nasty. I think Williams has been trying to prove a point this spring and, well, point taken.

Blake Lueders

Lueders has a new *free* video on Rivals.com, and here it is. VT is on the outside looking in, but he's got some OOS schools in his top 6 right now so we may have a chance if we push academics and family atmosphere.

I've said this before, he's on my short list of DE's this year- mainly because I think he's ready to play now.

Russell Bodine

Bodine, a top OL recruit out of FUMA, has VT in his top four after recent unofficial visits around the East Coast. The coaches have him pegged as a center. As far as I know, he's planning on visiting for the Spring Game. From what I know, Bodine really passes the eye-ball test at a legit 6'4", 275 lbs.

Beamer's Youtube dilemma

Randy King from the Roanoke Times has an update on Beamer's thoughts and feelings on the Spring Game You-gate. Free speech anyone? Well, I know that Beamer is probably worried about Saban, but VT's never been the team to out-scheme anyone. We're more of the you-know-what's-coming-try-to-stop-it kind of offense, but hey, whatever.

More on the 4/15 Scrimmage

From Vt.fanfoc.us again, this time with quotes from all of the assistants, sans Foster. Great post guys. Here is an exerpt from Coach Wiles:

Isaiah Hamlett took a step in the right direction. He has a lot of work to do, but he made some plays and he's getting better. Can Isaiah help us this fall? We'll see. Joe Jones, didn't get any camp because of shoulder surgery, and now he's trying to get it all figured out. He's improving, but he's still a redshirt freshman. Steven Friday hurt his elbow on the first play of the game. That's too bad because I really wanted to see him perform. Inside, Kwamaine Battle played well. Antoine Hopkins did some good things. He had one mental error compared to some of the other guys who had three mentals. I think Antoine is going to be a good player. I think he and Kwamaine can help us.

I feel like Graves will move back inside. That means we have to find another end who can help us. Somebody will have to give us 10-15 plays there. In the third group, Courtney Prince only got 8 plays, but he stood out. Justin Young, didn't take a step forward. Dwight Tucker did some nice things and he'll be able to help us down the road. Prince showed more power and turned his feet over. He runs well and makes plays and showed energy. I wish I would have given him more plays. He'll get more in our next scrimmage. A.B. Latif needs to take coaching and apply it on the field."

Cris Hill

Darryl Slater from the Richmond Times-Dispatch has a new update on Hill, who is currently battling with Carmichael and Whitley for the FC spot. I have always liked Hill's athleticism, and I'm really hoping he improves his awareness and aggressiveness. I've heard that Gray and Foster feel the same way.

At any rate, a decent interview and article for your pleasure today.

Quarterbacks

More on the QB situation from Nathan Warters at the Lynchburg News-Advance. Nothing incredibly new, but some good soundbytes.

Yesterday's Scrimmage Review

Our friends at Vt.Fanfoc.us have a new update on the Scrimmage yesterday. It includes Beamer's thoughts on the video-tape (Youtube-gate? Beamer-gate? Justsaynotothefirstamendment-gate?), and some other coaches' perspective. Anyway, here's an exerpt from Newsome:

BeamerBall.com: On one hand you seem very excited about Nick Becton, then, you turn around and say he's making too many mistakes. Can you get him ready in time for fall?

Curt Newsome: Okay, he's a true freshman who hasn't been playing football that long. I think we can get him ready to help in the fall because he has a lot of tools. But, it's a hard place to play. It just is. We're putting in a lot of stuff, they're trying to learn the offense and we're throwing a lot at him. I really like what he's all about and I'm very positive about his future.

BeamerBall.com: With Greg Nosal and Vinston Painter at guard, and Michael Via at center, you guys are very tall across the middle. Do you talk about that being a problem for Tyrod Taylor (short QB). Do you talk about that as a staff?

Curt Newsome: We've adjusted some sets. We've changed some splits and done some other things because it was a bit of an issue. I don't think it's a big issue. We've talked about it as a staff. Sure, we talk about just about everything. We just have to be firm with our protection on the inside, set a firm pocket, and if those inside three set a firm pocket, we won't have a problem throwing the football. You have a problem throwing the football when somebody is in your face. And, that's a problem no matter how tall you are.

In Remembrance

Check out this post by The Bleacher Report, honoring those who died and were injured two years ago.

WE ARE VIRGINIA TECH

ESPN Blog Updates

HD has another update, this time about new Boundry Corner Stephan Virgil. Check it out.

Offensive Line Experience

The Wall Street Journal (of all papers) has a good article breaking down the chances of winning it all via offensive line play. Virginia Tech football fans should know best that weak O-Line play means more three and outs than not.

Of all the "contenders" this year, VT and Notre Dame have the most experience on the offensive line, with 100 starts between the members. Our opening day opponent's OL, Alabama, has one of the worst numbers, at only 50 starts between them. Good news for Bud's D. Check it out, it's well written and a good read.

BREAKING NEWS

Phillip Sims, most everyone's top QB recruit from VA, made a verbal commitment to Alabama yesterday. The Virginian-Pilot has confirmed.

While I am a UA alumnus, this hurts- not because Sims made a pretty good decision (Alabama's QB situation in two years looks bleak right now), but because Sims basically ruled out VT from the get go. VT has to make a better effort at Oscar Smith, and get back on good terms with the coach there.

ESPN Blog Updates

HD has another update, this time about the scrimmage yesterday. Enjoy.

ESPN Blog Updates

HD at ESPN has more updating - this time with Beamer. An exerpt:

As for the receivers, a few have stood out to Beamer so far this spring. Among them are Xavier Boyce, a tall player who "looks like a wide receiver," and Tony Gregory, who was a running back at Fork Union Military Academy but has been playing well at wide receiver this spring, and has shown his speed. "I'm hoping our receiver position, which was so young last year, and probably a weakness for us to a degree because of the inexperience last year can become a strength for us this year."

ESPN Blog Updates

Heather Dinich is in da BBG and talking with coaches, and you can check here to see her updates. Her first is with Bud Foster, here is an exerpt:

His desk is almost impossible to see, but he knows exactly where to find a recent article regarding how Virginia Tech's defenses have ranked historically on the national level. He takes a lot of pride in the monster he's created.

"If we don't finish in the top 10, somebody's going to say I took it easy," he said, with a laugh. "I've lost my edge. That's not going to be the case. When I lose my edge, I'm getting out."

10 Best Individual Performances in VT Football History

The Bleacher Report has a new update on the 10 best individual performances in VT Football History. Their rundown:

Non-Players
(1) The Coaches in the '99 Syracuse game (63-0)
(2) The Lane Stadium Crowd v. Miami (Nov. 1, 2003)

Players
(3) Sean Glennon in GT Uni
(4) DE v. MD
(5) Brandon Ore's back-to-back 200 yd games
(6) Mike Imoh v. UNC
(7) Bryan Randall v. GT
(8) Druck v. UVa
(9) Andre Davis v. WVU
(10) Bryan Still v. UT
(11) Corey Moore v. Clemson
(12) Vick v. FSU

David Clowney

A good update on Clowney's attempt to win the 2nd WR spot on the Jets, from The Star-Ledger. An exerpt:

"I've been itching to get back out there and go against a couple of defensive backs," said the 6-0, 188-pound Clowney. "We have a guy like Darrelle Revis here. He went to the Pro Bowl last year. I think that's going to help all of us."

Clowney, a second-year pro from Virginia Tech, also plans to help himself. He says he and Ratliff have something special brewing.

"Yeah, we definitely had some chemistry going there," said Clowney. "And we kind of took that through practice during the year after I came back from my injury. Hopefully, we can do that same thing this year coming into training camp and the preseason."

Jake Johnson

Randy King again folks, this time with an interview with Jake Johnson. Johnson was one of my favorite recruits of 2009, and despite the fact he cut his hair (bad idea there Sampson) he may be my favorite defensive player this year. An exerpt:

Before arriving on campus last June for second-session summer classes, Johnson already had achieved semi-cult hero status inside Hokie Nation from a picture that had circulated on the Internet from his 2007 summer-camp visit to Tech.

Johnson worked out that day in a sleeveless T-shirt that flaunted his bulging biceps. His long blonde locks and wild-eyed expression in the photo instantly infatuated the program's staunchest pilgrims.

"Somebody e-mailed the picture to me and I was like, 'man, I look pretty crazy.' I thought it was pretty cool, really," Johnson said laughing.

Bruce Taylor

Taylor, by all accounts, is really looking good at the MIKE linebacker position. Randy King has an update on him. Here is an exerpt:

"I've really been impressed with Bruce Taylor," said Foster, a man who is not easily impressed.

"We moved Bruce from linebacker to end last fall and now we need him at linebacker. I was pleased with how he played all fall last season at defensive end, and I have been pleased by the way he's picked things up at linebacker now.

"I really like Bruce Taylor's football IQ. He's got a good football mentality, he's a big body and if he can continue to get faster, he can play the backer spot, too."

Brashaud Breeland

Here is an update on Breeland from GoGamecocks.com. He is said to favor the in-state schools (USC and Clemson), but has VT on his short list right now.

Gabriel Henderson

I've heard that Henderson, one of the top QB recruits on VT's board this year, is garnering more attention as of late from some major schools. My prognosis- VT is still the leader for his services, for a couple reasons.

First, we were the first major school on him, and we are on him like white on rice. Second, it's my understanding that he really enjoyed campus and plans on visiting again in the near future. All signs point to an early signing, but that's just prognositication at this point.

Nick Acree

Nick Acree, VT's lone verbal for 2010, is planning on transfering to FUMA for the upcoming season. He played DE last year for his HS, but will move to DT (his more natural position and the one he will play at VT).

My impression: Nothing but love for Acree, who I think will be our first 1st round NFL pick at DT (unless you're counting Bruce, but he's a DE in my mind even though he played DT at Tech). He is the kind of guy who is already physically dominating and can come in and play right away at DT for Tech's system, which asks DTs just to be a disruptive force and really nothing else. FUMA, and Shuman more importantly, will provide Big Nick with the base knowledge and footwork.

Season Preview Part II

The Bleacher Report has their prognostication for the middle of our season. Their rundown (and mine in parens):
At Duke: W 31-10 (W 24-3)
BC: W 23-13 (W 33-10)
At GT: L 21-17 (L 10-9)
UNC: W 34-13 (L 17-10)

More Friday Scrimmage Observations

More from our man Randy King! Since his call-out here at the Hokie Rant, King has been "on fire" with his updates, averaging nearly one per day... up from his average of one per month before the shot in the dark.

Anyway, here is my favorite part- Beamer has the time to go to Augusta this weekend. I barely have the time to keep up with Hokie News and info, and the man running the show has time for a weekend in GA. He must really trust his coordinators.

Whenever the head coach's position opens up at Tech, I hope that Weaver gives some serious consideration to my resume.

For all seriousness- here is an exerpt from King's Observations:

-- Tony Gregory, a freshman who entered Tech early in January, turned some heads at wide receiver. Gregory had two catches for 61 yards, including a 44-yard TD reception from Ju-Ju Clayton.

Gregory, who entered spring as the No. 5 flanker, played running back last fall at First Colonial High.

"For only five practices, his first at receiver, he's been doing well," Coale said. "He let it loose a little bit today."

Hokie Defense

The Bleacher Report asks "Will there be a drop off for VT's Defense this year?"

Not while Bud Foster's around. We've learned our lesson before. The Bleacher Report re-iterates the point.

More on Friday's Scrimmage

From Planet Blacksburg, they include some great soundbytes and some good info. Enjoy and here is an exerpt (talking about Ju-Ju's performance):

Clayton was the first of the two vying for the backup role to take snaps. Unfortunately for him, it was against the first team defense.

"I need a lot more reps to be where I want to be. My first series was shaky but as the scrimmage went along, I got more comfortable." In Clayton's first series he was met in the backfield by defensive end John Graves on one play and threw an interception to Kam Chancellor on another. He did indeed settle down though and settled down nicely for the remainder of the scrimmage. Clayton completed five of twelve passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. He also displayed good pocket presence and a great patience in checking down his receivers as well.

Ryan Williams

Randy King has earned his paycheck again, this time with an excellent interview with RW. I'm even grinning just thinking about it. HA.

Here's a play-by-play of the scrimmage from Beamerball Blog.

Here's two recounts from Norm Wood at the Daily Press, notes on the scrimmage, plus an article.

Michigan 2010 Recruits

VT is recruiting an unusual number of guys from out of state this year, including from the state of Michigan. The Detroit Free Press has a pretty good article about recruiting which includes a couple guys that have a VT offer:

C.J. Olaniyan- Scouts are really impressed with his physicality and body type. He looks like the type that could play at 270 and still be really effective at the DE position (John Graves anyone?)

Robert Bolden- High on VT's board for QB prospects, but not on mine personally. Why? Mostly because I think we don't really have much of a shot here. Seems like a Big Ten guy all the way, most likely MSU. He's a fantastic QB and I'd take him over a lot of the guys we have on the QB board, but at the end of the day the coaches (who know this) will probably not put the pressure on him until he visits campus.

Barry Brunetti

Brunetti, a 5'11" QB out of the Memphis area, is being recruited by the Hokies. Here is his a *free* video interview from Rivals.

Recap: No favorites, lists VT as on the verge of offering. Wants to make a decision before the season starts.

More on "The Hitch"

Darryl Slater at The Richmond Times-Dispatch has more to report on Tyrod's hitch. Some actual quotes from Tyrod are included. Enjoy, and here is an exerpt:

Sure enough, Taylor's delivery had deviated from the proper technique he previously used. Instead of bringing the ball back and keeping it higher than his shoulder, with his arm at a right angle, Taylor dropped the ball below shoulder level, with his arm straight, then lifted it above his shoulder. He isn't sure why he did this. Maybe it had to do with him bulking up when he got to Tech, he said.

"It didn't look like it messed with my accuracy," Taylor said. "I think it was just a slower release, maybe giving a defense time to break on the ball."

Taylor completed 57.2 percent of his passes as a sophomore last season and 53.7 percent as a freshman. Sean Glennon, a senior last season, split time with Taylor the past two years, when he completed 60.2 and 60.9 percent.

Scrimmage Today

As you know, there is a scrimmage today, open to the public. Beamerball Blog will have continual updates on the scrimmage if you can't make it.

Josh Furman

I've heard that Furman (6'2" 197 lb ROV prospect) is really looking hard at the Hokies, and we may be the leader at this time. He loves the coaching staff and the campus.

He recently received some pretty big-name offers so I hope this one is over quick. I've said this before, but him, Nick Dew and David Amerson are all guys that fit our defensive mold really, really well.

Tyrod's Hype

The Bleacher Report has a report analyzing Tyrod and posing the question - Does he live up to the hype? It's something to read, but really nothing that your rabid Hokie fan didn't already know.

Position Battles

Here is a look at the key Position Battles, along with some prognostication, from The Bleacher Report. They have had some decent updates, maybe not with incredibly new information, in the past few days so keep looking out for more.

BREAKING NEWS

Robert Crisp, one of VT's top OL recruits this year, has verbally committed to NCST. Unfortunate for Tech, he's a good get for State.

Spring News

Because no news is sometimes worse than any news, here is an update from Planet Blacksburg on the spring practices. An exerpt:

Another major point of interest to be highlighted in the spring game is the battle at tailback between last year's starter Darren Evans and the highly touted Ryan Williams, who redshirted his first season.

"I bring a lot of versatility to the game," Williams said.

Williams said the redshirt season last year was great preparation for himself as a player.

"I feel like I'm a lot more prepared mentally and physically also. I was 196 coming in last year, now I weigh 213. I feel like, with all that being said, I'm ready," said Williams.

In response to the pressure of playing with such high expectations, Williams said he relishes it.

"Well I love it. I love it. I mean, I can't get enough of it just because there's people that put you up there and a lot of em' feel like your not gonna meet the expectations. I like being put there and going higher than the expectations."

David Amerson

I've heard that Amerson is looking to make a decision soon, i.e. this summer. I think this bodes well for VT because we've been on him like white on rice.

He's a great athlete with the kind of body Cav looks for in a ROVER or WHIP, but at the end of the day I think he's the plug-in behind Zo Williams at FS. He's the most natural safety, in the eyes of some, that we've got on our board at this time.

Hopefully he makes it to either (or both) the Spring Game or the Mid-Summer Camp.

News from the Scrimmage

I'm sure everyone's read about it, but here is a recap from HokieSports.com. Pretty good, I wish Ju-Ju hadn't thrown the INT, but Whitley is the man, so I can't blame him.

Here is the Hokie Haven recap for your enjoyment as well.

HUGE 'Homer' Article

From The Bleacher Report. In fact, even I wouldn't go this far.

But I love it...

Surprising? I'm not so sure

Football.com has an article out going through the teams that might surprise, and to me its no surprise that VT is on the list. Not that it will give you any new info about our team, but check it out for the point of view and the other teams on the list.

Another Spring Ball Article

Here is a spring ball article from The Bleacher Report. It takes a look at the position battles and other interesting aspects of springtime at VT.

Tuesday, April 7, 2009

Gabriel Henderson

Henderson, a 6'1" 187 lb QB prospect out of Raleigh has an early VT offer and by the sounds of it appears to be one of our top priorities this year, behind Phillip Sims. PalmettoSports.com is reporting that he's getting interest from all over the ACC and doesn't have any favorities right now.
However, from what I've been hearing Henderson may in fact be our second commit behind Acree this year and may do so at the Spring Game. I think all of VT's fanbase will breath a little easier with an early QB on board. If we can get Henderson and Sims this year, the Hokie gurus have to give the class at very least an A-.

Legendary Challenge Seminar

Frank Beamer and Eddie Royal highlight the upcoming Legendary Challenge Seminar at VT, which will focus on promoting leadership within any organization, according to the Collegiate Times. There is a discount for current VT students. Sounds like a good time.

More on the D-Line Shift

The (semi-questionable) move to place Graves at DE has been scrutinized by many, but here is a good article by Darryl Slater at the Richmond Times-Dispatch with more clarification on the move. I like the focus on Demetrius Taylor, who is one of my favorites. Enjoy, and here is an exerpt:

"He's got to be more of a playmaker for us, not just a guy who's winning his gap," Wiles said of Taylor, who made 12 tackles last season, though defensive tackles don't post gaudy stats (Graves had 26 tackles). "And I'm putting him in a position to make more plays."

Taylor still vividly remembers the moment last spring when he knew he'd found his home at tackle. He lined up in the "two technique" against left guard Nick Marshman, so Taylor's helmet was aligned with Marshman's inside shoulder. When the ball was snapped, Taylor was able to handle Marshman's "cut-off block," as he stepped right to impede Taylor's path. "I just felt right," Taylor said.

Takoby Cofield

According to PalmettoSports.com, Cofield, a 6'6" 270 lb OL from Tarboro, NC has an offer from VT, along with Duke and East Carolina. He grew up a UNC fan, but is looking for what is best for him, and doesn't expect it to influence his decision.

Brandon Dillard

As any Hokie faithful knows, Dillard blew out his Achilles tendon last year and has dropped to fourth on the depth chart for the spring. Here is me (and Randy King) rooting for him, and a report from the Roanoke Times. An exerpt:

"All I can do is keep working and try and do what I can each day to improve," Dillard said. "The Achilles is fine. It's my upper leg, the quads and hamstring in that leg. I've got to get the strength back in those, and right now they're bothering me, ... They tighten up a lot."

Macho Harris

An interesting new article about NFL speed vs. quickness came out from ProFootballWeekly.com. Here is the crux of their study: "By subtracting the 20-yard shuttle time from the straight-line 40-time, as many teams tend to do as a gauge of lateral agility, evaluators can even better gauge a player's lateral agility than they can simply with short shuttle times, as the differential puts into perspective both long speed and short-area quickness."

In any event, they posit that the further away the quickness is from the straight-line speed the better player they will be. Good thing for Macho- he tops the DB list this year.

A.J. Cann

I've heard that Cann is very high on Tech's list (he's our #1 center prospect) and we're putting a full-court press for his services. He doesn't have any favorites right now but does list VT as one of the schools that is recruiting him the hardest right now.

Like I've mentioned before, Mike O'Cain has himself a handful in recruiting this year, with a lot of top prospects on his plate. Here's to his success.

BREAKING NEWS

Beamer & Co. have moved the scrimmages up according to Hokiesports.com. There is a scrimmage that is open to the public this Friday, at 4:30 PM at Lane Stadium. I won't be able to attend, so anyone who goes make sure to dish out the goods!

Louis Young

Young, a 5'11" 177 lb. CB from MD, is currently on the front page of the VT Rivals site as visiting this last weekend. I imagine that he had a good visit and I will post more information about it as I get it.

FWIW, I have been hearing that he has VT on his short list right now along with a bunch of Big East and ACC schools, as well as Stanford (who he decommitted from recently).

2009 Expectations

VirginiaTechFan.com has a good update with links-a-plenty about the Fighting Gobblers' preseason rankings and expectations. Enjoy.

Tyrod's Hitch

Randy King again folks -- this time with TT's "hitch" and his way to recovery. Here is an exerpt:

Taylor said it took him a while to get used to the new motion. Old habits can be hard to break, he said.

"It was a little awkward at first," Taylor said. "But after a while, it was pretty comfortable, maybe two weeks or so. I was pretty comfortable and I got to where I was delivering the ball with velocity. I was throwing the ball at home with some of my [Hampton High School] receivers. Basically, it was just getting into a rhythm, getting into a comfortable feeling and a comfortable release.

Zach McCray

As you well may know, Zach McCray visited VT this weekend and enjoyed his visit. I haven't heard anything about the visit yet that you can't read on any of the pay sites, but here is an update from PalmettoSports.com, discussing McCray's next visits.

I'm sure I'll hear more either later today or early tomorrow, so I'll keep you updated.

2010 Recruiting Update

From GoGamecocks.com, here is an update on Bashaud Breeland, J.R. Ferguson, David Amerson, Chase Williams and more. Enjoy.

Josh Oglesby

The Beamerball Blog has a new update on Oglesby, which states that he's doing well and maybe could earn the 2 spot at RB. I've heard that this is way more than 'maybe' and is looking fantastic, both in practices and at the 6 A.M. trainings. Watch out VT fans, Oglesby may well earn that spot, and good for him.

John Graves

Graves, as you well know, has been playing DE during the spring. Here is a pretty good article from Randy King at the Roanoke Times, who must have been reading this blog, because his updates have magically been more frequent!

"I'm not really thinking about down the road," Graves said. "It's about what's going on now. More of my focus is to just help develop the team. We've got a lot of good younger guys inside. And like Coach Wiles said this will help get a lot of the younger guys more experience at D-tackle."

With Tech loaded inside the trenches with vets like Cordarrow Thompson and Demetrius Taylor, plus young studs Kwamaine Battle, Antoine Hopkins, Courtney Prince and Dwight Tucker, Graves was more than willing to return to the old position he played at Meadowbrook High.

Spring Practice Photos

Beamerball has released the initial photos from Spring Practice. The guys are looking good, especially Boone at QB - woah momma!

Spring Practice Report

More from Vt.fanfoc.us on Spring Ball. Check it out, and here's an exerpt:

"Vince (Vinston Painter), you getting this," asks Newsome, eyes wide open. "Via (Michael Via), you have to know what you're doing here," continues Newsome. "Becton (Nick Becton) you're on the backside, and yesterday you blew this, you guys have to know this stuff. Put it down in your notebook and get it right. We're putting in a lot of new stuff, and we're not slowing down. You have to speed it up and make sure you know what you're doing!"

One of the lighter moments came as Newsome was telling his linemen that one of the reasons they were able to install some of these new protections is because of the fact that as a group, the offensive line is very athletic. "The reason we're putting this in, is because everybody in this room can move their feet. We're an athletic, fast, tough group. We're not a bunch of fat a**es." Then, Newsome paused, and stared directly at Will Alvarez. "Hold it, that's not true, because we do have a couple fat a**es. Now, I'd never call anybody by name. That's not my style. I'm not here to embarrass anyone. So, let's just say, for the most part, we're not a bunch of fat a**es." With that, Newsome gave Alvarez a wink and a smile and continued on with his meeting.

Spring Practice Report

Here is an update on Spring Practice from Vt.fanfoc.us. Enjoy, and here is an exerpt:

Beamer:

"Off the top of my head, I thought that Tony Gregory looked smooth at wide receiver and showed some speed. I liked the way Austin Fuller looked at receiver as well. He has some good hands.

Tyrod Taylor looked very much in control. I still think our offensive line is the most athletic that we've had in some time. But, really, when you're in shorts, it's hard to get a true read on who's doing what."

Newsome:

"At left tackle, we'll start with Ed Wang. I like what he's all about and I like the way he got better as the season went along. Late in the season, he was much more aggressive. He had some issues in the Florida State game. But, from that point on, he got better and better.

I think Nick Becton, Ed's back-up, is a guy who has a chance to be special. This is a huge spring for Nick. He needs to earn himself some playing time. I want to make sure that he gets quality reps and see what he can do."

Evan Hailes

Hailes, a 6'2" 310 lb DT from Oscar Smith High School, has VT in his early top 5, along with LSU, Tennessee, NCST, and Boston College. He has yet to visit VT but I like our chances, even though there is an anti-VT bias at his HS.

Sean Glennon

The Redskins had Glennon in camp for a pre-draft workout this weekend, and I'm sure that he's done well for himself. Glennon has an above average arm and, given protection, can be a solid backup in the NFL. Here is the Richmond Times-Dispatch's version, along with the Washington Times' recount. Enjoy.

Paul Jones

As promised, more information on Paul Jones has surfaced. A report by Examiner.com has an interesting, Penn State view on the situation.

My take: With the Newsome commitment to PSU, Jones sees that he may be sitting on the sidelines for at very least 3 years before he hits the field. Lucky for VT, at least in this scenario, we did not sign a highly touted QB recruit last year. To VT's chagrin, the same thing happened. Jones appears to be a more polished QB than Newsome at this time, but I would rather have the bird-in-hand.

Friday, April 3, 2009

BREAKING NEWS

PSU commit Paul Jones is looking around. The Penn QB has VT on his list to visit and learn more about, and I'm hoping that he gives us a good shot. More to come as I hear more.

Ju-Ju Clayton

Here is a good article from Darryl Slater at the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Here is an exerpt:

But because Clayton spent last season on the scout team, running the opponents' plays, he never actually did any of the things in his notes until Wednesday. And for all the film sessions and the times O'Cain quizzed Clayton and Davis in meetings about a formation, the coach said it is "impossible" to prepare Clayton for the on-field experience until he does it.

"You can read it on the paper, but it's different when you're out here on the field," Clayton said. "There's no paper. Being thrown out there, it's like being thrown into a pack of wolves, basically."

He calmed down as Wednesday's practice proceeded. O'Cain noticed fewer errors and liked how Clayton looked when he threw passes. Clayton almost didn't have this chance to contend. Sixteen months ago, during his senior year at Hermitage, his only Division I-A scholarship offer was from Army.

Mark Leal

Leal, a 6'1" 180 lb QB from Delray Beach, FL, has the Hokies listed as his early favorite at this point. Looking at film of Leal looks fantastic, high release point, good accuracy and mechanics. However, he's a little on the short side and with all the tall OLs we've been recruiting it may be a factor.

If that is his only weakness, I'll take him in a heartbeat.

Thursday, April 2, 2009

Marlin Lane

VT, along with many other schools including Clemson, USC-W, and Miami, is very high on Lane, a 2011 RB recruit from FL. I think that he's got the potential to be one of the best backs for that year, and I'm glad to hear that VT is already on the prowl.

I hope that we land him, but the RB depth may play some factor in Lane's decision. At any rate, its nice to see our coaches on a national recruit from the beginning.

Bashaud Breeland

There are some good updates on Breeland, who has a VT offer, from a few South Carolina publications:

Go GameCocks, x2, and Palmetto Sports.

Anthony Creecy

The NC WR is a really hot recruit in the ACC right now, and his offer list reflects it. His recent visit to VT was a good one, but I think we're on the outside looking it right now at the NC schools. However, if he decides to look out of state VT may have the best shot.

I've heard through the grapevine that Creecy is looking to come to the spring game, and hopefully the coaches can get in his ear and convince him that Blacksburg isn't that much farther away. As I've mentioned before, it would be great to get Creecy not just because of his athletic ability but because he may come as a package deal with Robert Crisp.

A.J. Marshall

Marshall, a 5'10" 170 lb CB prospect from NC, is one of or the top defensive back prospect on VT's recruiting board this year and has had an offer to play for the Hokies for months now. I know that Torrian Gray is in on his recruiting and it's helping a lot. He's got VT listed in his early top five, and I would expect it to come down to us and UNC when its all said and done. I've also heard that he really likes our special team play and the staff is really selling its continuity to his parents.

For what its worth, he's the number three DB on my board, after Nick Dew and David Amerson.

More on the Backup QB Race

Some good quotes from O'Cain this time, thanks to our friends at PilotOnline.com. Funny that the writer is Randy King, who I could have sworn read my post yesterday and is churning out VT stuff like its his job --- wait, IT IS. Again, here is a tidbit:

Clayton has confidence that he can be the guy that Tech needs.

"Last year, I came in here and took a peek at the highest level of competition, so this is what I'm getting right now," he said. "I'm still young, but I'm not going to always use that as an excuse. I'm ready for this."

Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Phillip Sims

Here is an article from ESPN's JC Shurburtt on Phillip Sims. Good quotes from his coach. Enjoy, and here is a portion:

"(Sims) picks up concepts very quick," Morgan said. "He calls all of his own protections and changes plays at the line of scrimmage. He's got every one of his teammate's numbers in his cell phone and he's the guy calling them up and getting them together to work out and run through plays.

"I ask a lot of the kids, but I get them to buy into it by telling them that once they get this down, there aren't many teams that will be able to stop us. For a player like Phillip, it also gets them ready for any system they may be asked to run in college."

Takoby Cofield

Cofield, a 6'4" 310 lb OG recruit out of Tarboro, N.C., has an offer (which is not on Rivals) from the Hokies from sources that I've talked with and is considering coming to VT for the spring game or a camp. He's one of those athletic guys that Newsome likes, but has a frame to really bulk up.

I've heard that UNC is in the lead, but VT could steal a good one out of the Tar Heel state.

Another Spring Ball Article

Old news but a good Southwest VA spin on things from the Bluefield Daily Telegraph. More importantly, another way to reduce productivity.

Tyrod and the QB Crew

Bill Roth has a FANTASTIC new article for his column "The Kroger Roth Report" on hokiesports.com. It goes into Stinespring's thoughts on TT and all of the potential backups (Boone, JuJu, Davis). Here is my favorite portion:

“He doesn’t have to worry about the senior quarterback [Glennon] anymore,” offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring said. “He doesn’t have worry about ‘Is he the starter? Is he not? Is it dual QB?’ He doesn’t have to worry about the youth part of it. He fully understands that, right now, he’s assuming the role that he’s the leader. And it’s a good time for him to assume that role on this football team.”

Going back to January, it’s been a different Taylor inside the Merryman Center. He’s played two seasons of college ball, played in two ACC championship games and two Orange Bowls, but now, coaches sense he’s ready to step his game up to a much higher level.

“Tyrod is excited about this spring,” Stinespring said. “His whole demeanor and approach to this spring. In the weight room, he set a couple of records. He’s stepped it up there. At the 6 a.m. workouts, he’s been setting the tempo. He’s been a leader. It’s the first time he’s stepped on the field and it’s his offense. You can see the leadership come to the forefront. You can see it in everything we do.”

Spring Position Changes

TSL has a good article on the recent position changes, if you haven't been alerted already. Enjoy.

Chase Williams

Williams, a 6'3" 240 lb LB from Leesburg, VA, and son of NFL coach Gregg Williams, is a major recruit this year, even though he lacks a VT offer. According to Palmetto Sports he's been visiting a bunch of schools in recent weeks and his recruiting is really heating up, with a recent offer from Miami.

Alfy Hill and Brent Benedict

A good update on their recruiting from the Fayettteville Observer talking about Hill and Benedict. Nothing entirely new, but still good reading.

Five Questions - Kyle Tucker

Another gem from Kyle Tucker at The Virginian Pilot - this time in the form of five spring questions for VT's football team. The general sort of questions, but here is my favorite exerpt:

Barquell Rivers stepped in for an injured Warren to make his first career start in the Orange Bowl. He played solidly, including a goal-line stop.
"I think he's got the inside track on one (spot)," Beamer said. Sophomores Jake Johnson and Quillie Odom are fighting for the other. "It's going to be real interesting in spring to see how quickly those guys come along. That's a wide-open position for us."

High Expectations

Randy King finally earns his paycheck at the Roanoke Times with this article on VT's national championship hopes.

As an aside, why doesn't the Roanoke Times hire me? Seriously DD posts all the time on the "insiders" column, and RK does nothing but chew the fat with the VT coaches. I could do that AND post.
