ESPN Blog Update

HD has done it again, this time with some good quotes from Newsome and some members of the OL on its improvement. Here is an exerpt:

Four of the five offensive linemen who have been taking the majority of reps with the first team this spring are former tight ends. It's part of a recent change in recruiting philosophy that could help the root of the Hokies recent offensive problems.

"With the zone play and those types of things, we've gone the last few years in trying to find more athletic guys," said offensive line coach Curt Newsome. "A while back it was a bigger, heavier type of guy. We kind of like to grow our own, get 'em in here, let them get in the strength program, have the good feet and be able to move around. And I feel good about where we're at right now. We've got four starters back from the bowl game. We've had a real good spring."

ESPN Blog Update

HD at ESPN has a new update on Darren Evans with some quotes from Hite, Ryan Williams, Frank Beamer and DE himself. Here is an exerpt:

Evans, though, is the most productive of the group, a quiet leader who, like the entire program, is shouldering higher expectations this fall. The difference this spring, though, is that Evans hasn't gotten a lot of reps, and that's because the staff already knows what he can do.

"It's a lot different from last year," Evans said. "I was really learning a lot last year, now it's kind of a review. This year, I know the expectations are high, but I know that a lot of people are excited about Ryan Williams, so that kind of cools it off for me. He probably has the bigger expectations because he's so much of a hit around here."

ESPN Blog Updates

HD at ESPN has more updating - this time with Beamer. An exerpt:

As for the receivers, a few have stood out to Beamer so far this spring. Among them are Xavier Boyce, a tall player who "looks like a wide receiver," and Tony Gregory, who was a running back at Fork Union Military Academy but has been playing well at wide receiver this spring, and has shown his speed. "I'm hoping our receiver position, which was so young last year, and probably a weakness for us to a degree because of the inexperience last year can become a strength for us this year."

ESPN Blog Updates

Heather Dinich is in da BBG and talking with coaches, and you can check here to see her updates. Her first is with Bud Foster, here is an exerpt:

His desk is almost impossible to see, but he knows exactly where to find a recent article regarding how Virginia Tech's defenses have ranked historically on the national level. He takes a lot of pride in the monster he's created.

"If we don't finish in the top 10, somebody's going to say I took it easy," he said, with a laugh. "I've lost my edge. That's not going to be the case. When I lose my edge, I'm getting out."

Beamer's Salary

Heather Dinich of ESPN has started a new debate about ACC coaches' salaries, and the saga continues today with Frank Beamer's. I find her column interesting and she normally focuses a little more on VT than some of the other teams, so she made the cut on my RSS feed.
