Phillip Sims

Here is an article from ESPN's JC Shurburtt on Phillip Sims. Good quotes from his coach. Enjoy, and here is a portion:

"(Sims) picks up concepts very quick," Morgan said. "He calls all of his own protections and changes plays at the line of scrimmage. He's got every one of his teammate's numbers in his cell phone and he's the guy calling them up and getting them together to work out and run through plays.

"I ask a lot of the kids, but I get them to buy into it by telling them that once they get this down, there aren't many teams that will be able to stop us. For a player like Phillip, it also gets them ready for any system they may be asked to run in college."

Oh boy.... The one that got away. Finally an elite, top flight QB from VA and he commits to Bama. Why can't we keep the best of the best in state? I'm pissed.

You are completely right, VT should be landing these guys (Manuel, Glennon the Younger, Sims, Newsome and Boyd). However, there are some compelling reasons why they haven't.

(1) Manuel and M. Glennon came out of HS directly after TT burned his shirt the first time.
(2) Boyd was not recruited hard by VT at all, and we had all our eggs in the Newsome basket.
(3) Newsome simply looked at the depth chart. No foul there, he had an earlier chance to make a significant contribution at PSU.
(4) Oscar Smith's coach really really dislikes VT, even though I feel like bigones should be bigones.

At the end of the day, we've got a bunch of quality guys still on our board - namely M. Leal, R. Young, R. Bolden, P. Jones, B. Brunetti, G. Henderson, etc. Leal is a guy I'm really high on (and most of the VT coaches and gurus as well), and I think he may be the one we land.
