Spring Game Analysis and Review

KT has updated his blog, with highlights and interviews about the Spring Game. Check it out, and here is a preview:

A couple of other notables: Kam Chancellor is a beast, as previously mentioned in this space. The proverbial light has come on for him at free safety and he is turning the proverbial lights out on offensive players. He clobbered Xavier Boyce on one play, the destroyed RB Zac Evans on a run up the middle, popping the ball loose and resulting in a 20-yard touchdown return by DT Antoine Hopkins, who added two “sacks” to his big day.

Lastly ... watch out Greg Boone. The tight end job seems very much up in the air all the sudden. And what a surprise. Chris Drager has had a big spring, capped by a stellar spring game. He hauled in four passes for 41 yards and looks like one of Taylor’s favorite targets. That will be interesting to see develop in the spring. The Hokies appear loaded at tight end.

Ryan Williams

Williams really impressed at the last scrimmage because of his moves (obviously) and his blocking. Kyle Tucker at the Virginian Pilot has a new article out on Williams and his adjustments to real life play. Here is a portion:

And that's what made Saturday's scrimmage, the Hokies' second of spring practice, so sweet for the rising redshirt freshman.

On one play, Williams blocked a defensive tackle's path to quarterback Ju Ju Clayton, then noticed a second defensive tackle bearing down on the passer. Williams launched himself at Kwamaine Battle, blasting the 283-pounder off his feet.

Demetrius Taylor

Taylor has been posturing for a position since his redshirt freshman year, first at LB, then at DE, and now at DT where he's found a permanent home. I think he kinda digs DT and I like him to make a significant contribution this year. Kyle Tucker at the The Virginian Pilot has an update on him.

Here he is, with some interviews and some commentary. I especially like the Ryan Williams block:

* We all know RB Ryan Williams can run. The big question has been whether he can block. Um. Yeah. Williams spring Ju Ju Clayton for a 23-yard scramble by first blocking A.B. Latif, then releasing him and cracking back on DT Kwamaine Battle in the backfield. The 210-pound Williams sent 283-pound Battle flying. It was a nasty. I think Williams has been trying to prove a point this spring and, well, point taken.

Five Questions - Kyle Tucker

Another gem from Kyle Tucker at The Virginian Pilot - this time in the form of five spring questions for VT's football team. The general sort of questions, but here is my favorite exerpt:

Barquell Rivers stepped in for an injured Warren to make his first career start in the Orange Bowl. He played solidly, including a goal-line stop.
"I think he's got the inside track on one (spot)," Beamer said. Sophomores Jake Johnson and Quillie Odom are fighting for the other. "It's going to be real interesting in spring to see how quickly those guys come along. That's a wide-open position for us."
