Our friends at Vt.Fanfoc.us have a new update on the Scrimmage yesterday. It includes Beamer's thoughts on the video-tape (Youtube-gate? Beamer-gate? Justsaynotothefirstamendment-gate?), and some other coaches' perspective. Anyway, here's an exerpt from Newsome:
BeamerBall.com: On one hand you seem very excited about Nick Becton, then, you turn around and say he's making too many mistakes. Can you get him ready in time for fall?
Curt Newsome: Okay, he's a true freshman who hasn't been playing football that long. I think we can get him ready to help in the fall because he has a lot of tools. But, it's a hard place to play. It just is. We're putting in a lot of stuff, they're trying to learn the offense and we're throwing a lot at him. I really like what he's all about and I'm very positive about his future.
BeamerBall.com: With Greg Nosal and Vinston Painter at guard, and Michael Via at center, you guys are very tall across the middle. Do you talk about that being a problem for Tyrod Taylor (short QB). Do you talk about that as a staff?
Curt Newsome: We've adjusted some sets. We've changed some splits and done some other things because it was a bit of an issue. I don't think it's a big issue. We've talked about it as a staff. Sure, we talk about just about everything. We just have to be firm with our protection on the inside, set a firm pocket, and if those inside three set a firm pocket, we won't have a problem throwing the football. You have a problem throwing the football when somebody is in your face. And, that's a problem no matter how tall you are.

Spring Practice Report
More from Vt.fanfoc.us on Spring Ball. Check it out, and here's an exerpt:
"Vince (Vinston Painter), you getting this," asks Newsome, eyes wide open. "Via (Michael Via), you have to know what you're doing here," continues Newsome. "Becton (Nick Becton) you're on the backside, and yesterday you blew this, you guys have to know this stuff. Put it down in your notebook and get it right. We're putting in a lot of new stuff, and we're not slowing down. You have to speed it up and make sure you know what you're doing!"
One of the lighter moments came as Newsome was telling his linemen that one of the reasons they were able to install some of these new protections is because of the fact that as a group, the offensive line is very athletic. "The reason we're putting this in, is because everybody in this room can move their feet. We're an athletic, fast, tough group. We're not a bunch of fat a**es." Then, Newsome paused, and stared directly at Will Alvarez. "Hold it, that's not true, because we do have a couple fat a**es. Now, I'd never call anybody by name. That's not my style. I'm not here to embarrass anyone. So, let's just say, for the most part, we're not a bunch of fat a**es." With that, Newsome gave Alvarez a wink and a smile and continued on with his meeting.

"Off the top of my head, I thought that Tony Gregory looked smooth at wide receiver and showed some speed. I liked the way Austin Fuller looked at receiver as well. He has some good hands.
Tyrod Taylor looked very much in control. I still think our offensive line is the most athletic that we've had in some time. But, really, when you're in shorts, it's hard to get a true read on who's doing what."
Newsome:
"At left tackle, we'll start with Ed Wang. I like what he's all about and I like the way he got better as the season went along. Late in the season, he was much more aggressive. He had some issues in the Florida State game. But, from that point on, he got better and better.
I think Nick Becton, Ed's back-up, is a guy who has a chance to be special. This is a huge spring for Nick. He needs to earn himself some playing time. I want to make sure that he gets quality reps and see what he can do."
